September 27, 2013 — The following was released by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea:
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) wraps up a successful Annual Science Conference 2013 with merit awards for excellent oral and poster presentations.
Almost 700 researchers attended the week-long conference and exchanged the latest and thought-provoking marine research with their peers. A total of 18 theme sessions covered a wide range of topics, including integrated ecosystems, ocean acidification, marine foodwebs, and observation and monitoring programmes.
The best presentations from these sessions were presented with merit awards by Manuel Barange, the chair of the ICES Science Committee at the Harpa Conference Centre.
Arni Magnusson from the Marine Research Institute, Iceland was awarded the Best Presentation Award for his study on uncertainty in age-structured stock assessments of Icelandic saithe.
Rudi Voss from the University of Kiel, Germany was awarded the Best Poster Award for his work with modelling trade-offs in multispecies fisheries.
ICES also recognizes the important contribution from early career scientists and presented three awards in this category at the conference. These awards were each accompanied by €1000 to assist the winners in attending further ICES meetings or workshops.
“I’m delighted to see so many early career scientists not only attending the conference and presenting their own work, but using the opportunity to spend the entire week immersing themselves in the other excellent research being presented,” says Manuel Barange.
The conference was organized in collaboration with the Marine Research Institute and the Ministry of Industry and Innovation in Iceland.
Full details on award winners and the proceedings of the conference can be found on the ICES website, Twitter and Facebook. The ICES YouTube channel will also feature presentations from plenary speakers.
