SEAFOOD.COM NEWS [SCOM] โ April 2, 2014 โ No major impact to Chile's commercial fishing sector has been reported after an 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the country's Northern coast Tuesday night.
The epicenter of the quake struck just over 60 miles off the coast of Iquique and destroyed around 40 artisanal fishing boats in the region, but otherwise no other impacts to any of Chile's commercial fishing operations have been reported.
A tsunami warning for much of the South American coast was issued and lasted into the overnight hours as waves as high as 6.5 feet struck coastlines. As of this morning the tsunami was lifted.
Five deaths were reported where officials said the dead included people who were crushed by collapsing walls or were killed by heart attacks.
