NEW BEDFORD — What happened to David McKinney?
That's what some members of Congress wanted to know following a letter from a NOAA official responding to their request for names and educational backgrounds of the past three directors of the office of law enforcement.
The issue arose when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration eliminated the degree requirement in the job posting for the vacancy, raising questions about its motives and suggestions the posting was being custom-tailored for a predetermined winner. Now questions have arisen over the accuracy of NOAA's responses.
Eric Schwaab, director of the National Marine Fisheries Service, answered U.S. Reps. Barney Frank, D-Mass., John Tierney, D-Mass., and Walter Jones, R-N.C., in mid-May. After informing them that the Office of Personnel Management sets no educational threshold for the law enforcement job, Schwaab listed the past three directors, all of whom had at least a bachelor's degree despite there being no formal requirement.
