October 22, 2014 — Although cod prices are high, the real price shocker these last few years has been scallops. As a result, there has been a "whole lotta cheating going on." Ironically, the cheating has been sanctioned by the U.S. government.
Ah, the two sides of seafood: It’s unequivocally one of the healthiest proteins you can consume, but it’s anything but inexpensive.
In fact, seafood is more expensive today than ever before. One of the key drivers is global warming. It’s beginning to impact our coastal areas – one fisherman tells us of warming trends of one to three degrees on the New England coast. This causes cod and haddock to migrate elsewhere in search of cooler temperatures, with two major consequences. First, inshore lobsters become more plentiful as cod is the natural predator to lobster larvae. Second, the cod catch in countries like Iceland and Norway has soared.
