BOSTON – August 12, 2010 – Local consumers may soon be able to find Massachusetts cod at seafood counters and grocery freezers next to Alaskan salmon and Maine lobster.
A bill, filed by Rep. James Cantwell of Marshfield and signed by Gov. Deval Patrick on Monday, would create a commission to consider ways to brand seafood caught in Massachusetts.
The commission would also consider whether a state marketing program for commercial fishing businesses would stabilize the industry.
The 13 commission members will be chosen from among the Legislature, state agencies and industry groups.
Fishermen hope that labeling seafood as a local product could attract more local customers.
