BOSTON — August 9, 2012 — For the second straight year, the federal government is expected to lower catch limits on certain New England groundfish that swim close to the sea bottom, including cod.
The venerable cod reigns as the official Massachusetts state fish. A hefty wood carving of the favorite catch hangs in the State House, and breaded, buttery-baked versions top many a dinner plate.
But local commercial cod fishermen say they are feeling anything but treasured.
In the current 2012 season, the fishing industry's total allowable catch for Gulf of Maine cod was reduced by 22% to 6,700 metric tons.
