Federal fisheries regulators have pledged $16 million in financial support to ease the Northeast ground fishing industry’s transition to a new management system.
The funding will go toward cooperative researchprojects and monitoring costs for sectors, or groups of fishermen thatare given a share of the total allowable catch for fish stocks, whichthey can manage for themselves.
JaneLubchenco, the new head of the National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration, announced the funding Wednesday morning whileaddressing the New England Fishery Management Council, which is meetingthis week in Mystic.
