May 8, 2013 — At the Managing Our Nations' Fisheries conference currently being held in Washington DC, there is a consensus on the part of the regional councils that more flexibility is needed in Magnuson, but there is little consensus on how to get there.
There are vast regional differences with the West Coast and Alaska seeing little reason to change, while the East Coast and the Gulf feel in crisis. It does not appear that legislation will move quickly, as the environmental community by and large opposes flexibility, and instead wants more regulations of things like forage fish and habitat.
