For many years, the lobster fishery has been Canada’s most valuable fishery and leading exporter. It contributes to the livelihood of more harvesters than any other species and sustains more communities than any other species, including communities that are home to processing plants and holding facilities.
William Coffey is a lobster biologist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).
Coffey said that the lobster status in Fortune Bay, Newfoundland is almost an anomaly from the rest of the province. Placentia Bay, which has a similar habitat for lobsters as Fortune Bay, is not seeing anything like the numbers in its counterpart.
