The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) has launched an initiative to strengthen the economic and ecologic sustainability of New England’s fisheries. Working with all parts of the supply chain, from harvesters to processors to retailers, GMRI will create a system that rewards local fisheries and seafood companies that commit to reducing their ecological impacts. Fundamentally, GMRI believes that an economically viable and ecologically sustainable seafood industry go hand-in-hand.
As part of its commitment to sourcing seafood products responsibly, Hannaford Supermarkets will provide a venue for early pilot efforts to reach consumers with information and local products. Together, Hannaford and GMRI will work to develop standards, evaluate seafood options against those standards, promote locally and sustainably harvested seafood to consumers, and track consumer response to seafood choices.
