What: Meeting with representatives of the Economic Development Administration

Dr. Brian Rothschild, Dean Emeritus of the University of Massachusetts' School of Marine Science and Technology, co-author of NOAA's recently-released report on the NMFS Science Enterprise, and chair of New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang's Oceans and Fisheries Council has issued the following statement and invitation to members of the fishing industry:
"As you may know, a team of representatives of the Economic Development Administration (EDA) will be in New Bedford for the next few days. Their visit was stimulated by Senator Kerry's discussions with Secretary Locke. While I have not seen anything in writing, it appears that their mission in New Bedford, as in other coastal cities, relates to mitigating economic effects of fisheries management. In this regard, we continue to be concerned about regulations that are not consistent with the Magnuson-Stevens Act, losses of hundreds of millions of dollars from chronic under fishing, and the economic relief and adjustments to catch levels specified in Governor Patrick's letter to the Secretary. It turns out that the team will be available to meet with the MOFC tomorrow, May 5, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm at the Fairfield Inn in New Bedford. The discussion will begin with a description of the mission of the EDA team, legal issues by Pam Lafreniere and Julie Peterson, policy and perspective impacts by Kevin Stokesbury, and gaps in economic analysis by Dan Georgianna. We want to then hear from you on any perspectives that you may want to contribute."
