NOAA officials made the right call. That's a good, refreshing step in the right direction — with more hopefully to follow.
There was, of course, never any reason for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to add the Atlantic bluefin tuna to the list of marine creatures protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act.
Yet, given NOAA's use of data in the past, a lot of fishermen were holding their breath Friday when NOAA officials prepared to announce their decision regarding the bluefin — and the petition from an Arizona-based environmental group that had sought the "endangered" listing.
