December 11, 2014 โ A new amendment for the management of summer flounder in 2015 has been approved by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and will soon be available for public comment.
The document, Amendment XXXVI, contains the current status and background on the fishery amd outlines a variety of options for the management of the stock. Among the alternatives are a continuation of the the regional management plan, changes to the regions themselves and even a potential return to conservation equivalency under which New Jersey managed the stock for years.
Chris Zeman, one of New Jersey's representatives to the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council, who was attending the MAFMC meeting in Baltimore this week, said he's confident regional management will be in place again for 2015.
"It seemed to work and there was no opposition to regional management," he said.
