BOSTON — March 1, 2013 — Federal fishery managers are telling struggling New England fishermen that they’ll cover as much of the costs of required independent catch monitors as possible.
Regional fishermen who target bottom-dwelling groundfish are facing devastating cuts in what they’re allowed to catch in 2013.
The cuts come in a year the fleet is supposed to absorb the cost of at-sea monitors for the first time.
Many fishermen have said with their radical declines in catch, it’s impossible to cover the at-sea monitoring costs, estimated at about $6.7 million for the fleet.
