BOSTON (AP) — January 9, 2013 — A Massachusetts Congressman is warning that disaster aid legislation being considered in the House of Representatives would come up woefully short for the local fishing industry.
A national fishery disaster declaration in the Northeast last year opened the door for emergency aid, as fishermen face massive 2013 catch reductions. In the last Congress, the Senate passed a $60 billion Superstore Sandy relief bill that included $150 million for fishermen in the Northeast, Gulf Coast and Alaska.
But Rep. John Tierney said the House Rules Committee says it will forward two disaster-related pieces of legislation — one without aid for fishermen, the other with $5 million.
