ALBANY, N.Y. — December 1, 2012 — New York conservation officials say they are shutting down fishing for horseshoe crabs since this year's quota of 150,000 has already been exceeded.
According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, nearly 170,000 crabs were taken in the spring and nearly 1,000 more in the fall.
The agency says it will meet with permit holders this winter about quota management next year.
Found in coastal waters, they are commonly used as bait.
