The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is considering harvest restrictions that could threaten the future of the fishery and thousands of families who depend on it.
November 12, 2012 (Saving Seafood) — The United Food and Commercial Workers Union is urging its members to support working families in the menhaden fishery. According to the union, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) is considering harvest restrictions that could threaten the future of the menhaden fishery and thousands of families who depend on it.
Numerous environmental groups, including the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation have repeatedly released statements and materials framing information about the fishery in such a way as to be misleading while stopping just short of being factually incorrect. These groups are calling for a 50% reduction in harvest which would likely cripple the commercial menhaden fishery.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union has asked its members to support the union fishermen at Omega Protein Fisherman by signing a letter requesting that the ASMFC adopt reasonable catch restrictions to protect the fishery without destroying jobs that support working families.
