November 4, 2012 — P.E.I.'s lobsters are starting the molting process earlier than usual because of the warm weather, fishermen say.
Ian MacPherson of the P.E.I. Fishermen's Association says the high water temperature is causing some lobsters to shed their shells ahead of schedule.
"This year we saw things happen at different time periods that haven't historically happened, so it's something that the fishing community's keeping a very close eye on," he said.
MacPherson said he has heard from several Island lobster fishermen who are concerned the molting is affecting the product they are selling.
MacPherson said fishermen will discuss changing the lobster season because of that.
"[We're] making sure that if we make changes down the way that they're in step with the changing environmental conditions," he said.'
