October 24, 2012 — Please be advised that the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, R.I. will be assisting the Navy’s Operational Test and Evaluation Force from Norfolk, Va., during operational testing of exercise torpedoes October 27-30, 2012 in waters approximately 25 nautical miles east of Chatham on Cape Cod, Mass.
Most of the expended torpedoes will be recovered in the exercise area by NUWC Newport’s torpedo weapons retriever vessel (TWR 841). If needed, a helicopter will pick up expended torpedoes at sea and deliver them to a second recovery vessel stationed south of Chatham. The helicopter, which will operate from Chatham Airport, will use the Harding Beach parking lot in Chatham to stage recovery equipment. All torpedo transfers will take place at sea.
A fixed wing aircraft operating from Hyannis Airport will patrol the exercise area to ensure no marine mammals will be in the area during the testing.
Primary test site, approximately 25 miles east of Chatham, Massachusetts:
Latitudes 41° 41’N to 41° 51’N
Longitudes 069° 17.0’W to 069° 30.0’W
