NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — August 8, 2012 — Mayor Jon Mitchell will meet at noon today at City Hall with fishing industry leaders to discuss proposed regulations that would slash the amount of groundfish the fleet is allowed to catch.
Information released last week suggests federal regulators intend to apply reductions of up to 73 percent across all Northeast groundfish stocks.
The proposed cuts have become cause for outrage in the city, the nation’s No. 1 fishing port as measured by the value of landings.
