WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 26, 2012 — U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine), the Ranking Member of the Commerce Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, today applauded the appointment of Dr. William “Bill” Karp as the Science and Research Director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Northeast Fisheries Science Center. NOAA Fisheries Chief Science Advisor, Dr. Richard Merrick, made the announcement this morning.
Senator Snowe said:
“At a time when our basic stock assessments have dramatic implications on the livelihood of thousands of fishermen, it is critical we have leadership at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, which manages our fundamental fisheries research. I am encouraged by the selection of Dr. Bill Karp, who has been a recognized and experienced voice in New England as we confront unprecedented challenges. He has been actively engaged with the fishing community throughout his career, and I am pleased that he will continue to incorporate crucial, cutting-edge technology into fisheries management in his new role. I welcome him to this position and look forward to working with him as Ranking Member on the Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard Subcommittee.”
