A team of conservation organizations will provide permits to local fishermen including Port Clyde’s ground fishermen as part of a project that will test new, more sustainable fishing methods.
The Nature Conservancy, the Island Institute and the Penobscot East Resource Center announced July 7 that they have purchased two fishing permits, and will make those permits available to fishermen working with them on research projects.
A limited number of multi-species ground-fishing licenses are issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service at a cost ranging from $100,000 to $700,000, according to Executive Director Mike Tetreault of The Nature Conservancy in Maine.
