MOREHEAD CITY — April 1, 2012 – Atlantic sturgeon stocks are said to be improving, but as of next month the fish will be listed as an endangered species.
The National Marine Fisheries Service has published a final rule in the Federal Register listing four distinct population segments of Atlantic sturgeon as endangered and another as threatened.
The Carolina and South Atlantic population segments, both of which are prevalent in North Caroina waters, will be listed as endangered effective April 6.
The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries sent out notice of the listing and reminded fishermen they should avoid interactions with the fish.
