BOSTON—Federal officials say they're now using a more accurate method to count the nation's saltwater recreational fishing catch.
They say the new method uses the same data collected from surveying fishermen about their catch, but changes faulty assumptions used when making the catch estimates.
For instance, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now assumes catch rates are higher at sites popular with fishermen, rather than treating sites the same.
The new method has significantly changed some previous estimates.
