NEW BEDFORD — Three years after opening up shop in Boston, the Whaling City Seafood Display Auction will open its third location Wednesday in Gloucester, the firm announced Monday.
This means that online seafood buyers will be able to access all three auctions at the same time in New England's largest fishing ports, and that they can mix and match their bids.
It also means sellers can bring their catch to the port most convenient and that some catch will be shipped between ports to help make it more convenient to buy and ship.
The company is being renamed BASE New England, the acronym standing for Buyers and Sellers Exchange. The individual locations will be called BASE Gloucester, BASE Boston and BASE New Bedford.
BASE Gloucester is owned and operated by Chris, Vito Jr., Nick and Marc Giacolone, who have operated the auctions’ affiliated Gloucester unloading facility since 2008. Brothers Richard and Raymond Canastra own the BASE software that serves as the operating platform for the auction.
