BEAUFORT — There was never any doubt where Jule Wheatly stood on the issues. He fought for the fishermen, rallied the Republican Party in the county, and stood his ground when he felt it was right to do so.
He was known for being straightforward and tenacious and those who knew him best still find his death Friday at age 61 hard to comprehend.
“I knew it was coming but I couldn’t believe it,” said Wheatly’s long-time friend Lee Crumbacker, of Beaufort.
Crumbacker said Wheatly’s death due to complications from cancer brought back feelings from another loss, the fall of the old Beaufort Fisheries factory, where he worked for many years and became a close friend of Wheatly.
