Gloucester’s fishermen are fishing again.
After two months of enforced inactivity for stock rebuilding, the inshore grounds — teeming with haddock and cod this time of year — were opened again by federal fishery regulators at midnight Sunday.
And an armada of day boats were back at work yesterday.
"Probably the whole fleet was out there, 40-odd boats," reported Capt. Billy Cunningham of the 36-foot gillnetter Fair Wind.
"It’s been a long time," said Capt. Peter Libro of the Dolores J., a 32-foot gillnetter whose crew landed about an 800-pound catch of cod in the early afternoon. "It’s nice to be back out there."
