NEWPORT NEWS, VA – July 15, 2010 – A Virginia study group is set to meet for the first time on the future management of a little fish that is a big player in the Chesapeake Bay.
The menhaden study panel is scheduled to convene Thursday in Newport News. The study group includes eight legislators and a wide array of other interests, including environmentalists, sport fishing enthusiasts and state officials.
The oily, bony fish is key in the bay's food chain, supporting striped bass, bluefish, croaker and other species. They are also processed into omega-3 fish oils sold as heart-healthy food supplements.
