Dr. Jane Lubchenco of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced today that underwater oil plumes as far as 142 miles from the BP oil leak exist.
"NOAA is confirming the presence of very low concentrations of sub-surface oil at sampling depths ranging from the surface to 3,300 feet and locations at 40 and 42 nautical miles northeast of the well site and another sampling station at 142 nautical miles southeast of the wellhead," said Lubchenco.
NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenko said that the tests were conducted at three sites by a University of South Florida research vessel.
