Endangered Species Day is a national day to learn about these species and ways to help them. Always held on the third Friday in May, Endangered Species Day is on Friday, May 15 this year.
NOAA Fisheries Service’s Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office hosts and participates in Endangered Species Day events throughout May and into June.

Endangered Species Day at NOAA’s Woods Hole Science Aquarium
Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16
11:30am-1:30pm
166 Water Street, Woods Hole, MA
NOAA’s Woods Hole Science Aquarium will be offering special events to raise awareness of endangered and protected species and research being conducted at the Woods Hole Laboratory. The Laboratory and Aquarium are part of NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC).
A variety of displays, exhibits, and hands-on activities will be offered right after the seal feeding at 11:00am. Meet some of the scientists conducting research on Atlantic salmon, sea turtles, North Atlantic right whales and other whale species, and learn more about the research they are conducting in nearby waters and offshore. Local NOAA Fisheries scientists will be available each day to discuss the NEFSC’s research programs on marine protected species, and recent and upcoming field programs focused on whales, sea turtles, and salmon. Safe Boating Day

US Coast Guard Station, 17 Harbor Loop, Gloucester, MA
The U.S. Coast Station in Gloucester is hosting their annual Safe Boating Day. There will be information from various organizations for recreational and commercial fishing. Watch signal flare and fire extinguisher demos! You can also drop off your expired safety flares and try out safety gear. Other events include: safety equipment requirements; VHF radio use class; rescue boat, police boat and cutter tours; and health and well-being booths.
At the NOAA Fisheries tables, you can learn how to safely enjoy watching endangered species in their natural environment while on your boat! Say hello to Whale and Dolphin Conservation’s life-sized inflatable Atlantic right whale, Delilah! Admission is free and open to the public.
Endangered Species Day at Stone Zoo
Saturday, May 16, 10am-2pm
Stoneham, MA
Did you know Stone Zoo is home to a number of endangered species including jaguars, Mexican gray wolves, Panamanian golden frogs, hyacinth macaws and others? Stop by on May 16 to learn more about these incredible endangered animals. Stone Zoo is partnering with NOAA Fisheries to teach visitors of all ages about endangered species. NOAA Fisheries will be bringing life-size inflatable replicas of animals, including a leatherback sea turtle and a 10-foot long Atlantic sturgeon! Meet the zookeepers and ask questions during scheduled zookeeper encounters. More information.
Sandy Hook Laboratory Open House

Live fish and sea creatures, interactive and educational games, a 32,000-gallon research aquarium, hands-on demonstrations and displays will be part of the annual Open House at the NEFSC’s James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook, NJ. Admission and parking are free. More information.
Marine Endangered Species Art Contest Award Ceremony

Students from all over the Cape Ann region submitted several pieces of artwork that featured endangered or threatened whales, sea turtles, and fish. There will be an award ceremony, followed by a viewing of the artwork in our gallery. The art will be available for public viewing in throughout the month of May.
World Oceans Day
