May 6, 2015 — A bill to update the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act is stirring the expected amount of controversy in the fishing community.
The short title of the the bill is “Strengthening Fishing Communities and Increasing Flexibility in Fisheries Management Act” and was introduced by Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska). The bill contains several changes that will provide more flexibility in rebuilding schedules for fishery stocks.
It would would also allow the separate management councils created by the original Magnuson-Stevens Act to consider a community’s economic need when setting annual catch limits.
