April 24, 2015 — The following was released by NOAA:
A very small and rare species of shark is swimming its way through scientific literature. NOAA Fisheries scientists have documented the second known specimen of the “pocket shark” (Mollisquama sp.) in a journal article recently published in the international journal of taxonomy Zootaxa.
While it is small enough to, yes, fit in your pocket, it’s dubbed “pocket” because of the distinctive orifice behind its pectoral fin. What is this pocket used for? This is one of many questions scientists are trying to answer about this rare shark species, which is in the same family as the intriguing cookiecutter shark (Dalatiidae).
It may be hard to believe, but scientists are still constantly discovering new species in our oceans. This is one of many reasons we need to protect our ocean environment. In honor of Earth Day week, please take a few minutes this weekend pick up trash in your yard, on a beach, or along the side of the road. Small steps can lead to bigger changes.
