February 5, 2015 — A program that brings locally caught fish right out of the Pacific and onto the plates of local school children is going swimmingly, according to the Fort Bragg Groundfish Association’s Michelle Norvell.
Many varieties of fish are making their way from Noyo Harbor to Fort Bragg schools through a program being called Fish to Fork.
The program is part of FBGA’s campaign called Tide to You, which is aimed at tying the community more closely to the West Coast Groundfish Fishery.
More than 200 pounds of fish have been served to students so far.
A number of different types of seafood will be provided throughout the year, including Petrale Sole, Sablefish, Chilipepper Rockfish, Arrowtooth Flounder, Grenadier and Dover Sole to name a few.
“We want to give the chefs a variety of fish with different colors, tastes and textures to put on the kids’ menus,” said Norvell. “Independent chefs have offered to support our school district’s chefs in creating new kid-friendly dishes that are both delicious and in line with national nutritional goals.”
