WASHINGTON — December 23, 2014 — Maryland's seafood industry will continue to be able to hire seasonal workers in the country on special visas, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski.
Mikulski, D-Md., chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that continuing appropriations legislation signed by President Barack Obama Dec. 23 includes a provision allowing Maryland’s seafood industry to stagger seasonal foreign workers here on H-2B visas to support harvests during peak seasons.
According to Mikulski’s office, without this provision, Maryland seafood businesses would be required to bring in all H-2B workers at the same time, creating costly burdens.
