Today, the Presidential Task Force on Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing and Seafood Fraud released its recommendations for establishing a comprehensive framework to combat IUU fishing and seafood fraud. The recommendations are available on-line and open for a 30-day comment period, specifically seeking input and guidance on how to implement them. The comment period will begin on December 18, 2014, and close on January 20, 2015.
Based on robust input received during the public comment process, the Task Force developed 15 recommendations reflecting the need to level the playing field for legitimate fishermen and businesses in the seafood industry, support sustainability in our global fisheries, increase consumer confidence in the sustainability of seafood sold in the U.S., and maximize existing resources and authorities. The recommendations also recognize that–based on our reputation as a global leader in sustainable fisheries and seafood consumption–the U.S. has a responsibility to more effectively influence and enforce against practices that undermine the sustainability of our global ocean resources.

In brief, the recommendations will:
– Combat IUU fishing and seafood fraud at the international level;
– Strengthen enforcement and enhance enforcement tools to combat IUU fishing and seafood fraud;
– Create and expand partnerships with state and local governments, industry, and non-governmental organizations to identify and eliminate seafood fraud and IUU seafood in U.S. commerce; and
– Establish a risk-based traceability program to track seafood from harvest to entry into U.S. commerce to prevent entry of illegal product into the supply chain and better inform retailers and consumers.
These recommendations will be open for a 30-day comment period beginning December 18, 2014, and closing January 20, 2015. We are specifically seeking suggestions and guidance on implementation of these recommendations. Based on the comments received, the Task Force will develop an action plan to be released in early 2015.
