The public is invited to attend the Council’s upcoming listening session on Wednesday, December 10th at 5 p.m. to learn more about deep sea corals in the Mid-Atlantic. The guest speaker will be Dr. Martha Nizinski, a zoologist at the NOAA Fisheries National Systematics Lab. The listening session will be held in conjunction with the Council's December meeting. Individuals are welcome to attend in person or via webinar at the link above.
Dr. Nizinski’s current research focuses on biodiversity and community structure of invertebrate fauna associated with deep-water coral reefs. She has played a key role in several groundbreaking investigations of deep sea habitats in the Northeast. Last summer, she was one of two lead scientists on board NOAA’s research ship Okeanos Explorer during the Northeast U.S. Canyons Expedition 2013—a 36-day exploration of deep sea canyons off the coast from Virginia to Maine. This year, she participated on a team of scientists that spent two weeks on board NOAA’s Henry S. Bigelow surveying and collecting samples of deep-sea corals and related marine life in canyons of the northern Gulf of Maine in U.S. and Canadian waters.
Dr. Nizinski’s presentation will be followed by an informal question and answer session. Online participants may submit questions and comments using the webinar's chat feature.
Please contact Jason Didden at jdidden@mafmc.org or (302) 526-5254 if you have any questions regarding the listening session process or if you would like to confirm that your computer is set up to access the webinar.
