VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Novemer 18, 2014 — The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Team was called out to the Lynnhaven Fishing Pier in Virginia Beach Tuesday afternoon for the report of a stranded whale.
According to Joan Barns with the Aquarium, the 8-foot juvenile pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) was in critical condition and the Stranding Response Team had to euthanize it.
People in the area spotted the whale late Tuesday morning along the Chesapeake Bay shore near Westminster Canterbury and called the aquarium. The stranding team was already busy responding to a cold-stunned turtle, Barns said.
