September 26, 2014 — The Gulf Seafood Trace, a Mississippi-based software program from the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission running on federal National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration grants, implemented its tracking program.
While the shrimping industry plays a major role in Louisiana's economy and culture, tracing the origin of shrimp to the state or a region has not been an easy task in the past.
The U.S. imports shrimp from various countries, including India, China, Thailand and Vietnam.
However, many local consumers prefer to buy from and support the local seafood industry, and some high-end retailers demand traceability of the products.
In an attempt to resolve this issue, the Gulf Seafood Trace, a Mississippi-based software program from the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission running on federal National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration grants, implemented its tracking program.
