June 30, 2014 — The news that Mortillaro Lobster Co. is seeking to expand through building a new wharf that will hold a two-story, 5,000-square-foot building on its property along Commercial Street is the latest clear sign that Gloucester’s waterfront businesses are adapting well to changes in the fishing industry and around the city’s harbor.
The longstanding lobster company, one of the leading lights in Gloucester’s marine industrial economy. is awaiting only its formal permit from the Conservation Commission, which approved the Mortillaro application earlier this month, before the company seeks its building permit.
The project is the latest in a series of positive moves along Gloucester’s harbor — all at a time when the fishing industry itself remains shackled by over-bearing federal catch limits and other regulations.
