SEAFOODNEWS.COM [Video] by Michael Ramsingh — May 21, 2014 — The seasonal fall in salmon prices is likely to kick in despite the strong salmon prices this winter, based on stable supply and expanding demand.
Urner Barry pricing shows a marked annual cycle in salmon pricing as the summer approaches, and nothing has indicated that will not play out this year.
Average prices for fresh 2-3 lb D-trim salmon fillets from Chile are up seven percent since January and are at their highest levels since June of 2013 according to Urner Barry.
This strong, second quarter salmon market is consistent with historical trends that see these prices rise right up until after the Memorial Day holiday. A shift in the supply situation for fresh salmon – with both more farmed and wild available, then kicks in and starts a consistent drop in the market through the third and fourth quarters of the year.
