May 6, 2014 — A 45-foot whale found belly-up New York Harbor suffered blunt-force trauma likely caused by a collision Sunday with a Norwegian Cruise Line ship that was stalled in the Hudson River for hours, officials said Tuesday.
But the cause of the fully grown female mammal’s demise remained a mystery after a necropsy proved inconclusive.
“We found evidence of blunt-force trauma with broken ribs and bruising throughout the muscles on the right side,” said Robert DiGiovanni Jr., executive director of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.
The Sei whale was found floating dead in the harbor Monday off Brooklyn's Sunset Park shoreline.
DiGiovanni said marine biologists found no evidence of propeller marks from the ship on the sea giant, but have determined it was stuck by the 1,060-foot Norwegian Breakaway Sunday morning in the Hudson River.
