October 28, 2013 — Thousands of dead and dying fish lined the bottom of a muddy stretch of the Delaware Canal on Monday after the pump that brings water to the canal failed over the weekend, park officials said.
Rick Dalton, manager of the Delaware Canal State Park, said the pump in the Delaware River was shut down last week so crews could reduce the water level and remove mud and rock that collects in the historic canal.
It was turned back on Friday, he said. However, maintenance workers realized the pump was off Monday morning and turned it back on, Dalton said. "We think the breaker may have tripped," he said of the pump's malfunction.
With only murky puddles of water in the canal, countless warm water fish, including small mouth bass, perch and minnows, were found dead or dying Monday.
